Scholem Aleichem lecture in memory of Evita Wiecki
ביכער פֿאַר אַלע Books for everyone – Popular Yiddish literature in Eastern Europe, 1860–1914
This lecture by Professor Nathan Cohen (Jerusalem) seeks to highlight the broad spectrum of Yiddish publications to which Yiddish readers had access from the mid-19th century to the outbreak of World War I. A representative selection of these works will be presented, including works of fiction of varying quality and in various genres and styles. Even what was known as “shund literature” [or trivial literature] is featured, as are popular science works tailored to the needs of an Eastern European Yiddish readership.
The lecture will be held in Yiddish, a language related to German. A handout will be provided before the event begins to aid understanding.
This event has been organized by the Chair of Jewish History and Culture at LMU and the Cultural Center of the Jewish Community of Munich & Upper Bavaria, with the kind support of the Kuszner Foundation, established in memory of Henrik and Edit Kuszner. May their memory be a blessing.
Prior registration is required. Further information can be found on the website of the Chair of Jewish History and Culture.
